Adventure in Tanzania, a preface

In just about a week, KLM will announce that it’s ready for boarding and i will step into the iron bird, excited and ready. I’ve got my bag packed and all necessities taken care of.  A last look at Kastrup airport in the morning mist and off we go - destination: Tanzania. As taken out of a fictional novel right ;-)

A few months ago, my cousin Kasper and I took the decision and started the planning. It was an idea i had been tumbling with for some time, and when Kasper announced that he were planning a trip to Tanzania, we immediately joined forces.

My dad has always been fascinated of Mountain climbing, Mt. Everest in particular. I guess this somehow lead me to follow his tail and i started reading a book by Lene Gammelgaard called “Everest, Vejen til toppen” about her trip to the summit of Everest in 1996. It didn’t take long before i could imagine myself climbing Hillary Step, fighting my way to the top (don’t tell me you never dreamt of exploring space as an astronaut or figting badguys as Batman). I started researching a little and after a quick Google search, i found a nice ordered list of highest mountains in the world. On top was Everest, the mother of all. However, what caught my interest was that, if sorted by prominence (the prominence of a peak is the height of the peak’s summit above the lowest contour line encircling it and no higher summit – the relative height/prime factor), Kilimanjaro actually topped at number four, even though it was “only” 5,895 metres high. Furthermore, i once heard that Kili was supposed to be a non-technical mountain, ideal for adventurous spirits. After watching the IMAX “Kilimanjaro – To the roof of Africa” it was clear to me – Kili was the destination of choice.

I’ll write a little more about the trip when takeoff is approaching. In the meantime, here’s the plan in short:

  • 3. June: Leaving by plane 05:55 AM to Kilimanjaro Airport through Amsterdam
  • 5-10. June: 6 day Kili climb through the Machame (Whiskey) route
  • 10. June: Descent from Kili and rest at Marangu Hotel
  • 11. June: Plane to Dar Es Salaam
  • 12-15. June: Cotton factory visit (producing for www.aqo.dk) and misc.
  • 16-19. June: Safari in the african bush
  • 19. June: Plane back to Denmark through Amsterdam

Some inspirational reading for the interested:

  3. Yes I was always fascinated about the thought to climb to the summit of the pure nature, but never had the courage – chicken! Now Lasse fulfills the dream “greate!” and Mom and I wish you all the best and good luck. Don’t forget to enjoy every second all the way and memorise it into your natural memory disc. If you will bring some video clips, pictures, your thoughts in your notebook; whatever, we will be very happy to enjoy them with you when you are home safe and rich on adventure again. GOOD LUCK and please be carefull both of you. Kisses and hughs from Dad and thoughts from Mom.

  4. Wee hurra :-) Lasse and Kasper have made it to the summit and have arrived safely without accidents back in the hotel. They have naturally bad and tired legs and muscles but have the memory filled with extreme advenure thoughts and sights. Congratulation Kasper and Lasse from a very proud father Kim :-) I wish it was me.
